Application of Biomedical Engineering

The field of biomedical engineering is constantly advancing rapidly. If past hearing technologies focused only on making any sounds louder, today’s technology aims to help users better hear the sounds they really need to hear.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is now widely incorporated in making hearing aids and cochlear implants, as AI can distinguish speech from background noise and adjust sound settings as the situation changes.
Moreover, such advancements are not limited to hearing devices. Smartphones and smartwatches today are equipped with sound recognition features. When they detect certain sounds—such as fire alarms and sirens—they notify the user through on-alert messages or vibrations.
Furthermore, real-time captioning technology is also advancing fast. Today, AI-based systems easily convert conversations into captions and transcripts, helping more people to understand the information.
Yet, no matter how much technology advances, the technology itself is not the thing that matters most. Some people choose hearing aids, some choose cochlear implants, some use American Sign Language (ASL) as their primary means of communication.
Indeed, the goal of biomedical engineering is not to make everyone communicate in the same way, but rather to offer a wider range of possibilities so that individuals can choose the method that suits them best. Undeniably, biomedical technology makes people's lives more convenient, safer, and more connected.
