Application of Biomedical Engineering: FM System

Beyond the teacher’s voice, there are various other sounds: whispers exchanged between classmates, the creaking of chairs, the sound of the air conditioner, and even noise coming in from the hallway.


Due to these disturbing sounds, students with hearing impairments may struggle to listen to the teacher and comprehend the lecture. 


The FM system is a technology developed to address this issue.


FM system is an assistive listening device that wirelessly transmits the voice from a small microphone worn by the teacher directly to the student’s hearing aid. 

This technology does not just amplify the sound like regular microphones, but delivers the specific sound to the student. 


It has been reported that remote microphone technologies, such as FM systems, help improve Deaf / Hard-of-Hearing students’ understanding and participation in the classroom.


Moreover, lately, DM (Digital Modulation) systems, which are more advanced than FM systems, have also come into widespread use. DM systems are known to have better sound clarity, reduced interference, and easy connectivity with other devices. 


Indeed, the FM system is not just a regular microphone, but is an example of biomedical engineering that integrates engineering principles with biology.
