After learning about Deaf West Theatre, one may wonder what kinds of productions the company has created. Although Deaf West Theatre has presented a wide range of works, Big River, Spring Awakening, and Elephant Shoes are some of the company’s most notable productions.
Big River is a musical based on Mark Twain’s novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. This production featured both Deaf and hearing actors and incorporated American Sign Language (ASL) in its performance alongside spoken English. In 2003, the production transferred to Broadway and won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical, helping bring ASL-inclusive theater to a much wider audience. Indeed, this demonstrated that productions incorporating ASL could achieve success on major stages like Broadway.
Furthermore, Spring Awakening is a rock musical about teenagers growing up in 19th-century Germany, exploring themes such as love, identity, and social restrictions. For this production, Deaf and hearing actors performed together, even with some characters represented by two actors. One actor would sign in ASL, while the other would verbally speak and sing the character’s lines, allowing the two languages to work together to tell the same story. The production transferred to Broadway in 2015 and became one of Deaf West Theatre’s best-known works.
Moreover, Elephant Shoes is a new, original musical that follows the story of Cy, a Deaf technology developer, and explores themes of communication and relationships. While Big River and Spring Awakening incorporated ASL into already-existing stories, Elephant Shoes places Deaf experience at the center of an original story. Unarguably, Elephant Shoes is an important example of Deaf-centered theater.
Ultimately, these three productions show how Deaf West Theatre’s performances have continued to develop. Big River brought Deaf performers and ASL to Broadway, Spring Awakening integrated ASL more deeply into the performance, and Elephant Shoes created a new story centered on Deaf experience.
