The International Week of Deaf People is held every year during the last week of September. In 2026, it takes place from September 21 to 27, with the theme “Declaring Deaf People’s Human Rights.” It also shares the same theme as the International Day of Sign Languages on September 23.

This year’s theme is especially meaningful because 2026 marks two important anniversaries: 75 years since the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) was founded and 20 years since the UN adopted the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The theme highlights the significance of recognizing sign language to realize Deaf individuals’ human rights.

Past themes have focused on different issues. For example, 2018’s “With Sign Language, Everyone is Included!” emphasized inclusion, while 2023’s “A World Where Deaf People Everywhere Can Sign Anywhere!” focused on access to sign language. Moreover, 2024’s “Sign Up for Sign Language Rights” highlighted advocacy and concrete action.

The week is celebrated through Deaf-led events, educational programs, cultural activities, social-media campaigns, and advocacy efforts. Furthermore, in 2026, the WFD is also encouraging people to raise the Global Deaf Flag and shine blue lights on public buildings to increase awareness.
