Hello
Hi, I’m Jiyoo! I was introduced to ASL when I met a friend in high school who was hard of hearing. However, until the very moment she informed me first about her condition, I did not realize it, as she spoke and communicated so well. Previously, I was just a teenager who never thought much about the Deaf community. However, through our friendship, I began to learn and notice the traces of Deaf culture around me. I followed my friend in joining our school’s ASL club, where I entered a community of people who shared the same passion and interest in the language.

I especially enjoyed learning how ASL functions as a language, with its own independent structure and deep cultural foundations. However, as a non-native signer, it was challenging to teach myself a new language. Here, I share resources to reflect on and document my learning process, and I hope All About ASL can also support others who are beginning the same journey.
What I am doing...
Although it may be difficult to navigate oneself through such unfamiliar language, I hope this site can reduce the burden and make your journey more fun.

Now, I’m a Vice President of my school’s ASL Club, where I work to encourage more students to learn about sign language and Deaf culture.

Outside of school, I have completed ASL and American Deaf Community courses from Purdue University to have a greater understanding of sign language.
